This paper discusses about the various challenges came across the construction of Tunneling in varying geological conditions and in Urban environment for phase III of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. Specifi cally the cases are enumerated from the DMRC package CC27 executed by a Joint venture group and Author was part of this execution group. This package contains 10 km of tunneling and is part of 159 km long Phase 3 and is likely to be open for public in various sections one after the other from March 2018. The undergorund section is of paramount importance and passes through a busy outer ring road of Delhi (India).
The case of twin tunneling executed by variety of TBMs taking the cognizance of starta given in southern part of Delhi adjoining to outer ring road is depicted in this paper. The contents also covers the role of hard geology leading to 8 Tunnel Boring machines for a length of 10 km long tunneling with excess consumption of Disc cutters. The cases of strucking of TBMs and challenges encountered are also depicted with precise working on each for future refernces.
