Police in India is still perceived to be working under the influence of the Police Act of 1861 passed by the Britishers. After independence, though numbers of committees and commissions have made series of recommendations for bringing reforms in the police system, but in the absence of political will, nothing much could be done on this front. Supreme Court’s intervention after Public Interest Litigation by two superannuated DGP’s lead to passing of New Police Acts by various States including Punjab. The present paper proposes to examine the Punjab Police Act, 2007 and see whether it is in tune with the Supreme Court directives and recommendations made by various expert committees and commissions.
