Abstract

Adolescence is a period of drifting from the protection and security of parents to a mature adulthood. During this transition there is an all out effort to develop self identity which largely revolves around sexual development and freedom in expression and decision making. There is a strong desire and pressure to be accepted in the peer group which is reflected in food habit, dressing and group conduct. This brings in turn many psychological, emotional and social stresses and strains. Although the growth period is relatively short, psychological development continues for a much longer period.
