Combining ability analysis was using 21 F1 hybrids and their parents obtained from dial lei mating design (excluding reciprocals). The parents used namely, Varuna, Rohlni, Ashirwad, Pusa Bold, Maya, Krantl and Basantl. Observations were recorded for nine quantlvative traits viz., days to flowering, days to maturity, plant height (cm), length of main raceme (cm), number of siliqua per plant, number of secondary branches per plant, oil content (%), 1000 seed weight (g) and seed yield per plant (g). The results Indicated that both additive and non-addltlve type of gene action were responsible for all the nine characters. On the basis of gca performance parents Varuna, Kranti, Rohini and Basantl for dwarfness; Varuna and Pusa bold for earllness Krantl for length of main raceme and number of siliqua per plant, Maya for seed yield per plant, Varuna gor test weight and Basantl for oil conent were most desirable combiners In F1 generation. Varuna, Kranti, Maya and Basantl appeared to be good general combiners for number of other characters.
Out of 21 crosses only ten crosses namely VarunaxMaya, Varuna x Kranti, Varuna x Rohini, Rohini x Maya, Pusa bold x Maya, Rohini x Krantl, Rohini x Basanti, Maya x Krantl, Ashlrwaad x Maya and Rohini x Pusa bold had highly significant and desirable specific combining ability and thus may be utilized by the breeders.
In India oilseed Brasica Is the second most important edible oil in average, accounting 5.30 million hectares with an annual production of 6.19 million metric tonnes during 2003–04. The cultuvation of oilseed Brassica which was earlier confined to northern belt, has now spread to non-traditional areas in Western and Southern regions of the country. Rajasthan followed by Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana are major rapeseed mustard growing states contributing altogether 81 per cent In acerage and 82.9 per cent In total rapeseed mustard production. Rajasthan ranks first and alone contributes 39.3 per cent to acerage and production in the country, respectively. In Uttar Pradesh, it is grown on 5.97 mha with a productivity of 5.84 meteric tonnes and 9.79 q/ha. (Damodaram and Hedge, 2006)
