Six strains of Volvariella volvacea were evaluated for their yield potentiallingocellulolytic enzyme activity and substrate degradation. Strain VvS-4 and VvS-5 produced significantly higher number of fruit bodiesl bed (146 and 147 per bed) and weight offruit bodies bed (989g and 978g), and thus gave maximum biological efficiency (15.22% and 15.04% respectively) as compared to other strains. These strains showed maximum CMCase and FPase activities. The cellobiase activity was comparatively much higher than CM Case and FPase activity. Thus strain VvS-4 was found to be the best strain in terms of CM Case, FPase and cellobiase activity. The xylanase activity was found maximum in strain VvS-4 i.e. 147 IU/100ml and lesser in VvS-5 (108 IU/100 ml). None of the cultures showed detectable laccase activity. The hemicellulose degradation was found higher in VvS-4 and VvS-5 (44.80% and 46.13% respectively) than cellulose degradation VvS-4 and VvS-5 (21.86% and 21.48% respectively) in all strains of V. volvacea. Hence VvS-4 and VvS-5 are the best strains in terms of yield potential, enzyme activity and lignocellulosic substrate degradation but this correlation pattern was not followed by other strains as efficiently as VvS-4 and VvS-5.
