Mortality rate of cow and buffalo calves under field conditions

Observation on 705 buffalo calves of landless, mariginal, small, medium and large families of farmers revealed that approximately 45.4 percent of male valves and 27.5 percent of female calves expired due to various disease. For male calves maximum mortality occurred in the animals of small and marginal category of farmers and in female calves the maximum mortality was found in the animals maintained by medium category of farmers. In case of desi and crossbred calves (H.F. and Jersey cross) maximum mortality occurred among the H.F. calves (31.71%) followed by jersey cross calves (28.3%) whereas in desi calves mortality rate was 5%.
