Scientific basis of yoga

Abstract

Literal meaning of Yoga is"to add", “to join”, “to unite”, or “to attach”self with Supreme or union of self with vast of cosmos for achieving uninterrupted longlasting happiness by feeling of separation from EGO. Scientifically the main action of yoga is to shift equilibrium from sympathetic to para-sympathetic leading to decrease heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, and achieving relaxation response, emotional balance, thus leading from stress to peace and happiness. All these lead to increase concentration, attention, memory, cognition and judgement, improved respiratory function (vital capacity,total lung capacity, forced expiratory volume) and beneficial effect on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma and restrictive air way disease, improve gut motility, digestion and treatment for irritable bowel syndrome, improve mood and anxiety through Gamma Amino Butric Acid (GABA), and lower cardiovascular risk factors. In new research studies it has been found that in chronic low back pain, special Yoga is 30% more beneficial than usual care alone in a United Kingdom clinical trial. Also the clinical trials have shown beneficial effects of yoga on cancer outcome and in de-addiction.
