Assessment of water quality is the process of collecting samples and analysing various physical and chemical parameters which can determine the quality of water. On the basis of this the hydrobiological status of a water body can be determined. In the present study physico-chemical parameters like temperature, transparency, pH, dissolved oxygen, free CO2, total dissolved solids, alkalinity, nitrate-nitrogen, phosphate-phosphorous, silicates and also the zooplankton community of Mawana canal in Meerut District (U.P.), India were analysed from surface water of canal. The study shows that the water quality of the freshwater canal lies between low to moderately productive range and the population structure of zooplankton community also correlates with the water productivity. The study was done from Feb 2009 to Jan 2010.
