The North Eastern region of India is well known for its rich biodiversity. Being one of the important hot spot of biodiversity, the region is potentially the wealthiest part of the country. The ethnic, cultural, eco-geographical, as well as the floral and faunal diversity of the region are unique and interrelated. The availability of about 50% of India's floral diversity in the region is very significant. Due to the advent of modernization, development and overexploitation of the bio-resources, the biodiversity of the region is under threat. It is high time to understand the potential of the biodiversity of North East India, their proper documentation, conservation and sustainable utilization for maintaining the livelihood security as well as economic prosperity. In this paper a conceptual account of crop genetic resources of the region, their possible threat, ways and means for their commercial exploitation and livelihood security of the people of the region is discussed
