Fodder performance of different oat (Avena sativa L.,) genotypes under agro climatic conditions of Telangana state

Abstract

Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh experiences mean minimum temperature of 10–13° C during winter season, hence very much suitable to grow Oat as fodder crop in the region. In view of the importance of the crop, an experiment was conducted to study the fodder yield potential of thirteen genetically diverse and improved cultures of oats along with two national checks and one zonal check during Rabi 2012–13 at AICRP on Forage Crops, Acharya N.G. Ranga Agril. University, Hyderabad, Andhrapradesh, India to identify suitable varieties for the region. The experiment was laid out in Randomised Block Design with three replications. The results revealed that the entries registered highly significant differences among themselves for all the characters except for crude protein yield. The entry JHO-2012-2 recorded highest green fodder yield of 469.9 q/ha as against best check Kent (432.9 q/ha) followed by OS 405 (440.3 q/ha), while for dry fodder yield OS 405 (93.2q/ha) showed significant superiority over zonal check JHO 2000-4 (74.5 q/ha) followed by JO-04-14 (89.5 q/ha), JHO -2012-2 (88.1 q/ha). Non significant variation was observed among the entries for crude protein yields. Plant height of the entries ranged between 82.6cm in RSO59 to 105.1cm in OS405 &JHO-2012-2. Significant variation was observed among the entries for plant height. The average number of days to 50% flowering among entries ranged from 72 to 91, RSO59,60 & OS-6 being very early and UPO-12-1 being very late. The L/S ratio varied from 0.27 in JHO2012-2 to 0.58 in UPO-12-1. Among the check varieties, Kent had shown superior performance with regard to green fodder and dry fodder yields, while OS-6 for crude protein yields. These two check varieties are very much suitable for cultivation in the region. the test entries JHO-2012-2, OS 405 and JO-04-14 were very promising with high green fodder and dry fodder yield potential, hence can be recommended in the region for cultivation.
