Combining ability effects for seed quality traits were estimated in 56 F1 hybrids of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) derived from crossing of seven CMS lines with eight fertility restorer lines. The general and specific combining ability effects and variances implied significant role of additive and non-additive gene action. However, nonadditive gene action was predominance in the inheritance of quality characters, suggesting thereby the exploitation of heterotic vigour in sunflower improvement programme. The cytoplasmic male sterile lines CMS 290A and CMSH6A and restorer lines RHA 272, RHA 856 and RHA 296 were found the best general combiners. The hybrids CMSH6A X RHA272, CMS 290A X RHA 265, CMSH6A X RHA 265, CMS 290A X HRHA5 and CMSH6A X RHA 296 displayed significant desirable specific combining ability effects for field emergence and other important seed quality traits.
