Estimation of Farm Machinery Related Accidents in Haryana

Farm mechanization has increased the production and productivity in Haryana State. But, during the operation of various agricultural machines, accidents takes place resulting either in loss of life or making people physically disabled or causing injuries. In the present study, data on machinery population for the year 1995–96 and 2000–01 were taken and population for the year 2005–06 was estimated. Total number of accidents and their percent share, the percent share of fatal and non-fatal farm machinery related accidents were also estimated. The total number of accidents estimated for the year 2000–01 was 15808. The major share of farm machinery related accidents during 2000–01 was from chaff cutter (41.76%) followed by tractors (31.96%),threshers (13.61%) and sprayers & dusters (7.84%) respectively. Estimated farm machinery accident for the year 2005–06 were 17227 and maximum number of accidents occurred was by chaff cutter (37.24%), tractors (36.90%), threshers (11.54%), sprayers & dusters (10.00%) and minimum was due to pump set (0.034%). The percent share of fatal and non-fatal accidents was 9.13% and 90.87%, respectively.
