Abstract

Studies were conducted at the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir during the year 2005–06 to standardize the protocol for the propagation of Pelargonium graveolens, an important aromatic plant, by using growth regulators viz. IAA (1000 ppm, 2000 ppm and 3000 ppm), IBA (1000 ppm, 2000 ppm and 3000 ppm) and a commercial rooting powder (rootex). In general, treatment efficacy was of the order: IBA > NAA > rootex > control. IBA applied at 2000 ppm proved to be significantly superior in inducing rhizogenesis as compared with other growth regulators tested. At this concentration (IBA 2000 ppm) cuttings also exhibited early leaf emergence (16.2 day), maximum callusing (93.335%) and rooting (90.00%). Production of roots in terms of number (22.30) and length of primary roots (11.00 cm) as well as field survival of rooted cuttings (85.30%) was also maximum in cuttings to which IBA 2000 ppm was applied.
