Correlation association and path coefficient analysis of different parameters affecting seed yield and its components in Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L. czern & coss)

Abstract

The correlations for twelve quantitative traits relating to yield were studied In the Division of Genetics, IARI, New Delhi during the years 2007 2009. In the present study, eight varieties of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L. Czern & Coss) were analysed for twelve parameters using RAUSTAT Windows V-1 2003 to determine the correlation coefficients between seed yiels and its componenets. The results indicated that seed yield was positively and significantly correlated with only three traits; biological yield (0.75), harvest index (0.44) and days to maturity (0.33) In their descending order of significance and had significant negative association with number of siliquae on main axis with an association value of -0.43. It was also observed that traits such as biological yield shows highly significant and positive correlation at genotypfc, phenotypic and environmental levels with seed yield whereas, 1000-seed weight shows highly significant and positive correlation with seed yield only at genotypic and phenotypic levels. Hence, these two characters are considered as crucial determinants of seed yield in Indian mustard. The present investigation has clearly indicated the Importance of direct and indirect selection for traits like biological yield, harvest index, number of siliquae on main axis and days to 50% flowering as they contribute 47.5%, 24.3%, 6.55% and 6.16% respectively towards seed yield. Therefore, appropriate selection and breeding for these characters can significantly increase the yield of Indian mustard.
