Prolonging vase life and flower quality of asiatic lilium cv. Novecento by various pulsing treatments

Abstract

Pulsing treatments involving sucrose (Sue) 5%, aluminium sulphate (AS) 400 ppm, silver thio-sul-phate (STS) 2.0mM and citric acid (CA) 1000 ppm alone and in combinations of Sue 5% were evaluated under completely randomized design for their influence on post harvest life and quality of cut Asiatic lilium cv. Novecento. Pre-cooled uniform spikes (90 cm) of bud colour-break stage were pulsed for 12 hours in different pulsing solutions. Distilled water was used as control. All the pulsing treatments used in combination with Sue 5% showed significantly positive effect as they improved water uptake, water balance, fresh weight gain of spikes, flower size and vase life. The vase life of the cut spikes increased from just 11.30 day in control to 17.01 day by manipulating the chemical combinations in association with Sue 5% plus STS 2.0 mM.
