Urban Heat Islands: Comparative Study of Jaipur City and Chomu Tehsil

Abstract

Urban islands can be defined as a permanent or temporary phenomenon in which certain areas within a city experience higher temperatures than their surroundings. Urban heat islands are primarily caused by concrete structures in urban buildings and homes, which prevent the radiated heat from escaping into the atmosphere. It has been observed that green areas experience lower temperatures than other areas. Rural areas have a relatively greater green cover in the form of plantations, fields, forests, and trees compared to urban areas. This green cover plays a major role in controlling heat in their surroundings. Transpiration is a process that plants use to regulate temperature. The root cause of urban heat islands in urban areas is the frequent construction of skyscrapers, roads, parking lots, sidewalks, and public transportation transit lines, which has exacerbated the phenomenon. This variation in temperature can be between 3 to 5 degrees Celsius. The present research is based on Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, Where, in the last few Years, higher temperatures have been recorded than in the surrounding rural areas. Due to the rising temperatures, the residents of the urban area are facing temperature-related problems. The present research is a comparative study of Jaipur and the nearby area of Chomu. The research paper explains the ill effects of rising temperatures and focuses on the efforts being made to control the rising temperatures in urban areas.
