Urban Space Reflections: Navigating Redevelopment, Placelessness and Issues of Homogenisation in Lodi Garden Iconographic Landscape

Lodi Garden is one of the major green spaces of Delhi and is more than a landscape molded solely by its visitors; it, in turn, molds them. It gives inspiration for artistic endeavors, encourages introspection, and the shared experience of people in its surroundings fosters social bonding. While scholars have touched upon the significance of urban development, the role of cultural identity through infrastructure has been dealt with far less in the context of green urban spaces of Delhi in general and Lodi Garden, in particular. This study tried to analyze how redevelopment in the environment and iconography over time reflects shifting cultural dynamics; examines the juxtaposition of historical and modern iconography and its contribution to rising placelessness; explores instances where participants actively contribute to the homogenization of urban space by modification of iconic elements in the garden. The methodology involves the use of qualitative techniques of Iconography and Participant Observation to examine the intricacies of ingrained cultural nuances. The analysis revealed that the cultural landscape of Lodi Garden hasn’t just become a land of contrasts from its past. It also showcases continuity in the architecture and religious significance of Quranic verses. The timeless resonance of these verses not only speaks of the religious practices of bygone eras but also connects the contemporary visitor to the cultural and spiritual ethos that has endured throughout several centuries. It further reveals that the Lodi Garden complex reflects the ‘real,’ and its urban surrounding is ‘the other.’ The other is an integral part of it and makes it a living canvas in perpetual motion. The findings suggest that the Lodi Garden is a living testimony to the dynamic interplay between human engagement and the iconic elements that define this green oasis. It encapsulates that it is not just a journey through history but an ongoing dialogue between the heritage of the past and the vibrant pulse of the present.
