To reduce the initial costs associated with polyhouse construction and to foster protective cultivation among rural smallholder and marginal farmers, the development of low-cost polyhouses is imperative. A significant body of research has concentrated on enhancing the affordability of polyhouse structures through the use of bamboo and other locally sourced materials for their frameworks. Our analysis indicates that the construction costs of various naturally ventilated bamboo polyhouses are approximately 50% to 60% lower than those of conventional galvanized iron (GI) pipe polyhouses. This review provides a comprehensive examination of low-cost polyhouses employed for crop production, emphasizing their frame and cladding materials, environmental control mechanisms, and associated economic benefits.
