Linear programming based crop land allocation to maximize profit of marginal/small farmers

Abstract

The study aims at using the linear programming technique for allocation of land to maximize the profit of marginal and small farmers of Shamsukh village in Hisar district during the Kharif and Rabi seasons. the crops considered for study in Kharif season were cotton, pearl millet, arhar, rice, guar and jowar. Rabi crops considered were wheat, mustard and barseem. The limited resources taken into account for the study were season-wise land allocated to different crops, man days, tractor hours, operating capital and net returns per ha of the farmer. Linear programming models were developed separately for marginal and small farmers. The study showed that during Kharif season, net returns could be increased up to 8.63% and 18.46% by marginal farmers and small farmers respectively while during Rabi season net returns could be raised by up-to 64.92% and 47.64% respectively.
