Resistance potential of indeterminate tomato lines against root knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita)

Abstract

Root knot nematodes are the major limiting factor in successful production of tomato crop in the infested soils. Use of host resistance is the most eco-compatible approach to combat the losses caused due to this nematode. In the present study, a set of 25 indeterminate tomato germplasm lines along with a resistant and susceptible check were screened against root knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita by artificial inoculations as well as by using molecular marker linked to the Mi gene. The same set of germplasm lines was then evaluated for yield parameters and fruit characteristics under field conditions under polynet house. Eight genotypes viz., MS-113, CLN-2366C, E-9111, E-9113, E-9321, PAU Sel. 2–1, PAU-951 and Punjab Swarna were found moderately resistant against root knot nematode, M. incognita. The variety, ‘Punjab Swarna’ recorded significantly higher per plant yield (7.5kg/plant) while line PAU YT-3 recorded the maximum fresh fruit weight (93.0 g).
