Abstract

Rice starch (RS) based film reinforced with titanium dioxide was developed at different plasticizer (glycerol 50, 60 and 70 g/100g of starch) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticle (NP) concentrations (0.1%, 0.4%, 0.7%, 1.0% and 1.3%) by casting a film forming solution on levelled teflon trays to improve the properties of starch based biodegradable films. Properties and in-vitro test of antimicrobial activity of TiO2/RS composite film were evaluated. Thickness, moisture and solubility of film were increased with higher level of plasticizer. Increased concentration of TiO2 slightly increased the thickness and mechanical properties of TiO2/RS composite film. Water vapour permeability (WVP) of film was lowered with the increased plasticiser levels but improved supplementation of TiO2 nanoparticles.
