The present study was carried out to characterize physical properties of tomato using image processing. A total of 150 fruits of six grades were evaluated for geometric parameters. The average length, width and thickness of all the tomato grades were found to be 49.66 mm, 30.24 mm and 28.37 mm, respectively. The average mass and sphericity varied between 5.04 g to 66.94 g and 0.58 to 0.84, respectively for smallest to largest grades. The values of major axis, minor axis and thickness for all the grades of tomato measured using image processing were observed to be 2146.78 pixels, 829.36 pixels and 673.19 pixels, respectively. The eccentricity varied between 0.63 to 0.98 (mean 0.89±standard error 0.09). High dependence between mass and projected area (R2=0.994) of tomato suggested the usefulness of image processing for mass determination.
