Effect of crop geometry and varieties on growth and productivity of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan L.)

Abstract

A field experiment was carried out on a sandy loam soil under irrigated conditions during kharif 2015 to evaluate the effect of crop geometry and varieties on growth and productivity of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan L.). The treatments consisted of five planting geometries viz. 45 cm x 28 cm, 50 cm x 25 cm, 60 cm x 21 cm, 75 cm x 17 cm and 90 cm x 14 cm and two varieties viz. PAU 881 (indeterminate) and AL 15 (determinate). The results indicated that 60 cm row spacing with determinate AL 15 genotype performed significantly better in growth parameters, namely dry matter accumulation and leaf area index, as compared to other treatments. The phenology obtained under 90 cm row spacing and genotype AL 15 showed an edge over genotype PAU 881 in getting less days to 50% flowering as well as in maturity of the crop.
