Effect of different root extracts on egg hatching and juvenile mortality of root-knot nematode

Abstract

Root extracts of six different plants viz., soybean, sesame, chenopod, bell-pepper, maize and marigold @10 and 20%, with an exposure period of 24, 48 and 72 hr, were evaluated for their efficacy against egg hatching and juvenile (J2) mortality of Meloidogyne incognita, commonly known as root knot nematode. At 20 per cent concentration, no egg hatching was recorded in any of the root extract (except marigold) up to 72 hr of exposure. At 10 per cent concentration, root extracts of all the intercrops (except for bell-pepper) were effective enough to restrict the egg hatching. At both the concentrations, root extracts of all the intercrops (except soybean) caused considerable juvenile mortality (52.23–100 per cent) over control and marigold root extract was observed to be the most effective.
