Genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance for yield and its contributing traits in muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.)

Abstract

Twenty-four genotypes of muskmelon were studied for genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance so as to utilize the prospective outstanding genotypes in further breeding programme. Analysis of variance showed adequate variability for all the characters studied. The genotypes PSDPM 1-7-50 and Arka Jeet could be useful in further breeding programmes since they possess desirable traits. Estimates of the phenotypic coefficient of variation were higher than those of genotypic coefficient of variation indicating presence of environmental influence. The heritability estimates were moderate to high for most of the characters. The highest estimates of heritability and genetic advance were recorded for node at which 1st female flower opens and rind thickness. The studies indicated scope for moderate to high level of improvement in yield.
