Artificial lactogenesis in bovines - a review

Artificial induction of lactation using hormones should be viewed as on option in chronic reproductive problem animals, but it is not a substitute to normal parturition. The researchers started with long therapy and now a days they could squeeze the schedule to few days. The milk composition of induced animals is comparable to the normal milk. In buffaloes also artificial lactogenesis has been reported but with varied response. In this paper various protocols used for induction of lactation, composition of milk and blood hormones have been reviewed. Artificial lactogenesis is a good proposition for cattle, however for buffaloes still lot need to be done to standardize the therapy. With this therapy, the responsibility of the Veterinarian increases many folds, due to the excretion of hormones in the milk, which needs to be emphasized to the masses. Now a days it is more important in the light of WTO/GATT.
