Ground water management in South-west Punjab

Abstract

The simulation-optimization model has been developed by using embedding technique for optimal and sustainable ground water management for South-west Punjab. Objective function of the model was to maximize pumpage over the whole tract; subject to constraints on governing ground water flow, ground water potential depending upon ground water quality and irrigation requirements, canal water availability and hydraulic heads. The study reveals that it is possible to arrest the rising trend of water table in South-west Punjab by meeting 90 per cent ET demand through seasonal and inter-seasonal redistribution of canal water releases and enhancing the ground water pumpage by 75 per cent during kharif and 135 per cent during rabi from existing level.
