Status of drinking water with respect to its chemical characters before and after passing through different water filters was assessed by taking electronic, membrane and Puristone filters. The water samples of hand pump and tap were taken from five different localities of Ludhiana city viz. Field Ganj, Salem Tabri, Lakshmi Nagar, Madhuban Enclave and Sarabha Nagar. The water of selected localities was found to be not fit for drinking purpose as it contained higher amount of total hardness, total solids and BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) and microbial count than permissible limits as recommended by BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards). Amongst different filters, electronic and membrane filter is recommended to make water fit for drinking purpose.
