Design and Construction of on-Farm Brick Sand Store for Potatoes

An evaporatively cooled non-refrigerated storage structure (brick and sand store) to store 100 bags of potatoes for a short period during April - June was designed and constructed. The outside dimensions of this double walled store are 5.49m x 5.49m x 3.36m. Low cost locally available materials were used to make this store cost effective. The dbt and RH inside the store ranged from 19 to 23°C and 88.5 to 98% respectively. The depression in temperature between inside and outside conditions ranged form 11.3 to 15°C. The cost analysis of the store was carried out and the cost of the store worked out to be Rs. 57000.
