Disposal of Household Garbage in Different Localities of Ludhiana City

The proportion of different constituents in household kitchen garbage from the three localities of Ludhiana city, i.e., Bhai Randhir Singh (BRS) Nagar, Haibowal and Gandhi Nagar was determined by weighing the different constituents of garbage of fifteen 4-membered families, once a week for 5 weeks. Fifty families were selected randomly from each of the three localities, and data were collected regarding the different types of wastes generated in the household and the status of household waste disposal in the city. In majority of the families, fruit waste was thrown in the bins in Gandhi Nagar (76%) and BRS Nagar (66%), but in the municipal bin in Haibowal (38%). It was discarded daily in BRS Nagar (92%), Haibowal (76%) and Gandhi Nagar (60%). Majority of the homemakers threw vegetable waste in bins in Gandhi Nagar (76%) and BRS Nagar (66%), but in the municipal bin in Haibowal (34%). Majority of the homemakers discarded rarely in Gandhi Nagar (52%) and almost daily in Haibowal (64%) and BRS Nagar (70%). The maximum amount of vegetables waste produced per family per day was highest in BRS Nagar (0.55 Kg) followed by Haibowal (0.441 kg) and 0.275 g in Gandhi Nagar. The total amount of fruit waste was 0.285, 0.599 and 0.675 kg in Gandhi Nagar, Haibowal and BRS Nagar, respectively. The respective quantities of waste tea leaves were 0.057, 0.062 and 0.069 kg. The miscellaneous waste was 0.082, 0.079 and 0.135 kg in Gandhi Nagar, Haibowal and BRS Nagar, respectively. The total waste generated by five families over a period of five weeks as 35.7, 29.5 and 17.5 kg in BRS Nagar, Haibowal and Gandhi Nagar, respectively. The average per capita daily production of garbage has been estimated to be 0.827 gm. in Ludhiana city.
