Scientific method: An epistemological perspective

The present work addresses the topic of method as a way to attain knowledge. It focuses on the research method to produce scientific knowledge. To reach this goal, it is made a historical overview of methods developed by philosophy, beginning with the Greek philosophers and others who devoted more time to specific methods to reach knowledge. Philosophers, in their most varied ideological approaches and positions, have been concerned with the origin and the acquisition of knowledge. Thus, different theories and trends paved the way towards a solid basis for the scientific method, both quantitative and qualitative, that today make up the curriculum of postgraduate careers in universities. In this article it is reflected upon some foundations that give support to the scientific method followed in some universities. Thus, it highlights the use of appropriate scientific methods for a postgraduate thesis.
