The study identifies key factors influencing the performance of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs). Ten FPOs were studied, five each from Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, and a cross-case analysis approach was applied to compare five selected dimensions between high-performing and low-performing FPOs. The findings revealed notable differences across several parameters. High-performing FPOs were more involved in high-value crops, such as fruits and vegetables, than low-performing FPOs. Moreover, FPOs with their own brand and stronger market linkages demonstrated significantly better performance. The results highlight the need to improve infrastructure to support value-added activities, such as processing and storage, which are crucial for enhancing market competitiveness. Strengthening institutional linkages with public extension organizations and nearby research institutes is essential to ensure timely access to technical knowledge and advisory services. Additionally, targeted support from government agencies and NGOs in branding and market access can further increase the effectiveness and sustainability of low-performing FPOs.
