Occupational commitment is a critical determinant of teachers’ effectiveness and the overall quality of education. This study aimed to assess the extent of occupational commitment among government and private school teachers in Punjab, India. A descriptive survey research design was employed, covering twelve randomly selected districts, 24 blocks, and 96 schools (48 government and 48 private). A total of 480 teachers were randomly selected as respondents. Data were collected using a structured and pre-tested occupational commitment scale, which assessed five dimensions: commitment to learners, society, profession, attainment of excellence, and basic human values. The findings revealed that teachers in both government and private schools demonstrated moderate to high levels of occupational commitment across all dimensions, with minor variations in specific items. No significant overall differences were observed between the two groups, indicating a shared professional ethos and intrinsic motivation among teachers, regardless of institutional affiliation. These results suggest that teachers’ commitment is influenced more by personal attitudes, ethical orientation, and professional values than by school type.
