Indian poultry sector: Strategies for nutritional, socio-economic and environmental security

The Indian poultry sector currently contributes approximately 20 percent to the total gross value added from the country’s livestock industry. This significant contribution is fuelled by the escalating per capita net domestic income, rising per capita private final consumption expenditure, and ongoing modernization trends. Consequently, there has been a notable surge in the demand for poultry meat and eggs. Projections derived from the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model indicate a continued increase in the production of poultry meat and eggs, signifying a growing need for additional resources, particularly feed. To address challenges such as disease outbreaks and escalating feed costs, it is imperative to enhance productive efficiency. This can be achieved through measures like improving healthcare and infrastructure facilities within the poultry sector and bolstering research initiatives. By focusing on these areas, the Indian poultry industry can navigate challenges and sustain its upward trajectory in the future.
