Effect of dietary supplementation of ginger and garlic and their combination on growth performance and economics of Japanese Quails

Abstract

A biological trial was conducted to study the effect of dietary supplementation of inger, garlic and their combinations on growth performance and cost economics in Japanese quail. Day old quail chicks (N=150) were distributed randomly into five treatments with three replicates containing ten birds each and fed with five experimental diets T1 (Basal diet), T2 (BD+1% ginger), T3 (BD+2% garlic), T4 (BD+0.25% ginger and 0.5% garlic) and T5 (BD+0.5% ginger and 1% garlic) from day one to five weeks of age. Cumulative body weight gains were significantly (p<0.01) higher in treatment groups compared to control except the T5. Cumulative feed conversion ratio was similar in control and up to T4, whereas significantly poor FCR was noticed in Tc. Feed cost per kg live weight gain was higher in treatment groups than control. Among the treatment groups T4 (i.e. Combination of Ginger +Garlic at 0.25 & 0.50 %, respectively) was economical (p<0.05) as compared to other treatment groups. Thus, the present study indicated that supplementation of either ginger, garlic or their combinations in diets may not be economically feasible for producing Japanese quail meat except the meat is sold with some premier prices by its value added qualities.
