Arsenic contamination in ground water is one of the most important environmental concerns in West Bengal, India. Backyard poultry from arsenic affected zone is the worst sufferer due to ingestion of contaminated subsoil water. The investigation was conducted on 20 (twenty) backyard poultry birds in arsenic contaminated areas and 10 (ten) same of arsenic safe zone. Different haemato- biochemical parameters and DNA fragmentation percentage assay were conducted for evaluation of arsenic induced toxicity in backyard poultry system. The backyard poultry birds reared in the particular endemic zone showed significantly altered haemato-biochemical indices and DNA fragmentation. The experimental study revealed that haemato-biochemical alteration and DNA fragmentation might be important biomarkers to detect chronic arsenicosis in backyard poultry in arsenic endemic zone.
