The present study was designed to evaluate the oxidative stress markers in muscles of birds under heat stress and correlation was done with the serum markers of muscle injury. A total of 26 samples including blood and muscle tissues were obtained from meat birds during slaughter and same number of samples were collected from healthy birds for comparative studies. Different oxidative stress related biochemical parameters such as malondialdehyde (MDA) and reduced glutathione (GSH) were carried out in the tissue homogenate and measured. Several muscle injury markers including creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were estimated in serum sample. Significant differences were observed in the GSH as 16.57±0.37 and 6.72±0.88 (pM) and MDA concentration as 28.05±0.96 and 54.62±1.47 (nmol/g), respectively in healthy and heat stressed birds. The serum concentration of CK and LDH were significantly increased in birds under heat stress whereas, AST showed a non-significant increase in serum. The study concluded that heat stress resulted in oxidative stress of muscles as evidenced by reduced GSH and increased MDA in affected muscle tissue of birds.
