The effect of dietary supplementation of coriander seed powder on egg cholesterol, serum lipid profile, and caecal microbiology in laying quails

Abstract

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of coriander seed powder (CSP) on egg yolk cholesterol, liver cholesterol, serum lipid profile and caecal microbiology in laying quails. The experiment was conducted on 80, eight weeks old laying quails following Completely Randomised Design (CRD) wherein CSP was fed at four dietary levels (0, 1, 2 and 3%). All the laying quails were distributed randomly into four dietary treatment groups (T1 to T4) on the basis of similar egg production. Each treatment had 20 replications containing one bird per replication. The feeding trial was conducted for six weeks. The birds were housed in specially designed laying cages with watering, feeding and egg collection facilities and were reared under standard managemental conditions. The corn-soya meal (CS) based basal diet was supplemented with desired levels of CSP to formulate the four experimental diets. During trial, the weighted amount of experimental diets differing in levels of CSP was offered as mash ad libitum to respective groups of birds. The results revealed that the egg yolk cholesterol (mg/g yolk), liver cholesterol, serum cholesterol and other serum lipid parameters like triglycerides, LDL and VLDL cholesterol highly significantly (P<0.001) reduced as compared to nontreated (control) group. For HDL cholesterol highly significantly (P<0.001) increased. For serum glucose reduced highly significantly (P<0.001) as compare to control. The effect on caecal microbial count found that reduced TVC highly significantly, Coliform count and E. coli significantly and had no significantly alter the count of Lactobacilli. The study concluded that CSP when used as a dietary supplement in laying quails found that egg yolk cholesterol reduced highly significantly (P<0.001) over control group and without affecting production performance of laying quails. Maximum egg yolk cholesterol reduction i.e. 15.67% was recorded in diet containing 3% CSP.
