Assessment of training needs of broiler poultry farmers in Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh

The study was conducted in five development blocks of Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh among 75 poultry farmers from selected blocks to access training needs in the various areas of scientific broiler farming practices. In order to assess training needs of poultry farmers, the responses of individual poultry farmer were recorded on four point continuum as most needed, needed, least needed and not needed with respective scores 4, 3, 2 and 1. Further, total weighted score was calculated for each aspect by summing up responses (frequencies) and multiplied with respective continuum scores. Finally, ranks were given on the basis of total weighted score. The study revealed that majority of poultry farmers (77.3%) perceived their training needs in health care as most needed, followed by finance (74.7%), poultry insurance (73.3%), marketing (72%), feed and feeding management (69.3%), brooding management (68%) and bio-security with rank I, II, III, IV and V, respectively. Further, health care aspect of poultry farming was given importance by all the categories of poultry farmers, and in case of other aspects, poultry farmers had differential training needs in poultry farming. So, training programmes may be designed separately for each category of poultry farmers to make them competent in poultry farming.
