Constraints perceived by tribal backyard poultry rearers in Bastar district of Chhattisgarh

A study was conducted on constraints of tribal backyard poultry rearing practices in Bastar district of Chhattisgarh. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview schedule and through direct observation. The interview schedule was administered to 120 respondents (12 respondents per village). It was found that the main constraints reported in backyard system were attack of predator, low productivity of village poultry, and lack of veterinary services, low knowledge about health care and unstable price of poultry meat. Few respondents reported lack of high disease incidence, lack of protection against diseases and weak extension services. The study also pointed some suggestions for solving the constraints regarding tribal backyard poultry rearing practices.
