Chemical composition and microbiological quality of rendered poultry slaughter byproduct meal prepared from diferent types of chickens

Abstract

The chemical composition and microbiological quality of rendered poultry slaughter byproduct meal prepared from different types of chickens (layers, broilers, and spent hens) were evaluated. Three lots of 50 pieces of layers, broilers, and spent hens, comprising of a total of 150 birds were procured from Central Avian Research Institute and slaughtered manually by modified kosher method. The byproducts (feather and offal) so obtained were processed in batches in dry rendering unit employing appropriate temperature, pressure, vacuum and duration (140°C, 1.0 - 4 kg/cm2 for 30–60 min.) in the rendering plant of the Institute. Data on proximate composition of poultry slaughter byproduct meal (PSBM) from different types of chicken slaughter waste indicated that rendered PSBM contained moisture in the range of 7.7–7.9%, crude protein 54–61%, ether extract 18–26%, total ash 9.59–17.6%, acid insoluble ash 0.16–0.22%, calcium (3.22%), phosphorus 1.87% and gross energy 6060–6220 kcal/kg. The rendered byproduct meal also found to be microbiologically safe up to a storage period of 2 month as coliforms, staphylococci, salmonella and yeast & moulds were not detected though the total aerobic plate count ranged from 23 ×102 cfu/g. In general, the result of present study indicated that the nutrient composition of PSBM varied greatly depending upon the type of chickens used.
