Studies were carried out to evaluate disinfectants, acidified iodine (Virudine), peroxygen compound (Virkon-S) and acetic acid for their effectiveness against Newcastle disease virus (NDV) in water in the presence of organic matter (5% serum) and water hardness (400ppm CaCO3) on carrier surfaces such as steel, plastic and wood. Virudine, Virkon-S and acetic acid at 1%, 0.5% and 0.5% concentration, respectively, in hard water and soft water completely inactivated NDV both in the presence and absence of organic matter with contact time of 10 minutes. At 0.1% level Virkon-S inactivated NDV in the absence of organic matter both in hard and soft water, however the presence of organic mater both in hard and soft water interfered the inactivation of NDV by Virkon S. All the three disinfectant were effective in inactivating NDV on hard surfaces of plastic, metal and wood materials. There was no positive HA on any of the treated surfaces tested. The presence of organic material did not affect the efficacy of the disinfectant used. In conclusion, the compounds evaluated Virudine (1%), Virkon-S (0.5%) and acetic acid (0.5%) have virucidal effect in suspension and on carrier surfaces against NDV at recommended concentrations. Presence of organic matter and hardness did not interfere with action these compounds at recommended concentrations (1% Virudine, 0.5% Virkon-S and 0.5% acetic acid). However, at lower concentration (0.1%) of Virkon-S, the organic matter interfered with inactivation of NDV both in hard and soft water.
