The microsatellite based genetic diversity was studied in one stock of Dahlem Red, one selected strain of Rhode Island Red (RIR-B) and their cross (Dahlem♂ × RIR-B♀) using ten microsatellite marker loci. Polymorphism between different strains was observed for different microsatellite marker loci. MCW-0216 marker showed highest polymorphism across all the populations with observed average number of alleles being 15, while MCW-0222 showed least polymorphism with only 7 alleles. Expected heterozygosity across the strains ranged from 0.77 (MCW-0222) to 0.92 (MCW-0216) while average heterozygosity varied from 0.67(MCW-0222) to 0.86 (LEI-0192).The different strains were not in Hardy Weinberg equilibrium for allele frequencies, which demonstrated that the allele frequencies are under the influence of some forces. The dendrogram based on Nei's (1978) genetic distance method placed cross (Dahlem♂ × RIR-B♀) in between Dahlem and RIR-B indicating nearly 50% inheritance from both the parental breeds.
