Response of broiler chicken to dietary fenvalerate

Abstract

A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of added fenvalerate (FEN) in broiler diets on growth, feed utilization, livability and carcass traits. The FEN was added at 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 ppm levels into starter and finisher basal diets. Each diet was offered ad libitum to 3 replicated groups of 12 broiler chicks reared in battery cages from 0–21 d (starter) and 22–42 d (finisher) of age. Weekly body weight, feed intake and livability were recorded. At 42-d age three birds from each replicate were slaughtered to study the carcass traits and visceral organ weights. Body weight gain and feed intake were not influenced significantly due to various levels of FEN in diet. However, significantly (P<0.05) poor feed conversion ratio was observed during overall (0–42 d) period in chicks fed diet with 120 ppm FEN as compared to all other levels. The livability was 97.2 per cent in groups fed diet with 120 ppm FEN against 100 per cent at other FEN levels. There was no significant effect of FEN on carcass yield and organ weight. It was concluded that the broiler chicks could reasonably tolerate fenvalerate in their diets up to 90 ppm level.
