Abstract

The study conducted through an expost facto research design in Andhra Pradesh revealed that the majority of the commercial poultry farmers comprising both layer and broiler farmers belonged to middle age group, graduates, had poultry farming as the main occupation, well experienced, had small poultry farm size (<50000), medium income and had more urban contact. So the poultry sector needs the farmers to possess these characteristics. The psychological characteristics of the commercial poultry farmers revealed that majority had high innovativeness, scientific orientation, achievement motivation, risk orientation, knowledge on poultry production and rationality in decision making. Further, the farmers had medium information seeking behaviour, economic motivation and computer awareness. The poultry sector owes its success partly to the psychological characteristics also. It implies that these characteristics of poultry farmers are more suitable to commercial poultry production.
