The role of nitric oxide (NO) in male reproductive system of Japanese quail was investigated. The effect of nitric oxide donor (Sodium nitroprusside) and inhibitor (Nε-nitro-L-Arginine methyl ester) on the cloacal gland functions and other reproductive parameters like fertility was studied. In first experiment adult male Japanese quails (35 wks) were given the NO modulating drugs for 10 days. Under this study, area of cloacal gland, foam (synthesized by cloacal gland), level of NO in serum and foam were examined. In second experiment male (25 wks) reared in pair with laying female were administered the same drugs in same dosage and the percent fertility was recorded. The NO donor has significantly decreased area of cloacal gland and foam production.
