Chemical evaluation of different varieties and effect of feeding commercial soybean grain on the carcass characteristics and meat composition of Japanese quails

Abstract

Maximum crude protein, crude fat, total carbohydrate and total ash values recorded in 21 different varieties of soybean under study were 48.27,22.67,40.89 and 6.74 percent, respectively. The trypsin inhibition activity of commercial soybean grain fed to quails was reduced from 20.5 TUI/mg to 4.5 TUI/mg on heating the commercial soybean grain at 100°C for 10 minutes. Although feed intake and mortality figures were similar in controL D-1 (untreated soybean grain) and D-2 (heated soybean grain) groups but significantly higher (P<0.05) growth rate and minimum feed unit requirement (P<0.05) per unit gain in body weight were recorded in D-2 group. The most probable reason for this finding may be the superiority of diet due to heat treatment. Carcass characteristics and meat composition values were however, not influenced by the dietary variation.
