Dermonecrotic reaction and antibiogram of Staphylococci isolated from quails

A total of 220 samples were collected from both ailing and dead quails from which 146 Staphylococcus spp. were isolated. Among these, only 39 strains (26.7%) were proved to be coagulase positive. These strains produced a hemolysin/toxin as detected by dermonecrotic reaction on rabbit skin after I/D injection. These pathogens, then tested against few antibiotics for antibiogram and found to be sensitive against ciprofloxacin (95%), cephalexin (84.6%), gentamicin (79.5%), chloramphenicol and streptomycin (both 69.2%), ampicillin (64.1%) and amoxycillin (56.4%) but resistant to tetracycline (58.9%), nalidixic acid (56.4%), penicillin G (46.2%), cloxacillin (41.1%) and doxycycline (35.9%).
