Efficacy of Potassium pennangnate (KMnO4) medicated drinking water at graded concentration of 1, 0.1, 0.01 and 0.001 per cent in the control of experimental S. Gallinarum infection in day old broiler chicks was assessed. The chicks were randomly distributed in six groups (1 to 6) of ten birds each. Day old chicks in first four groups (1 to 4) were given drinking water medicated with KMnO4. at concentration of 1, 0.1, 0.01 and 0.001 per cent respectively. The birds were simultaneously infected through feed contaminated with live S. Gallinarum at the rate of 103 organisms per gm of feed. Sixteen day post-infection (PI) results revealed no mortality in chicks from 1,0.1 and 0.01 per cent KMnO4, group as well as uninfected control group (group 6) while 40 per cent chicks in infected control group (group 5) and 20 per cent chicks in 0.001 per cent KMnO4. group died. S. Gallinarum was isolated from all dead birds. The results of the study suggested that KMnO4 at lower concentration in drinking water can be used for effective control of fowl typhoid in large scale poultry rearin.
