Insecticidal Efficacy of Essential Oils and Igrs on Groundnut Bruchid Caryedon Serratus (Olivier) Under Modified Atmospheres

Abstract

Chemical fumigants used for storage pest control pose risks to the environment, human health, and seed quality. This study assessed biorational insecticides viz., three essential oils (sweet flag, clove and peppermint) and two insect growth regulators (S-methoprene and pyriproxyfen 10 EC) against groundnut bruchid, Caryedon serratus (Olivier). 5% Peppermint oil @ was the most effective as a contact insecticide, repellent, and feeding inhibitor, achieving 80–100% efficacy. 5% Clove oil also performed well, while pyriproxyfen 10 EC had the highest fumigant toxicity. In modified atmospheres, temperature and humidity impacted essential oil efficacy, but pyriproxyfen 10 EC remained stable. Maintaining optimal conditions (25°C and 55% RH) is key to maximizing insecticide performance. This study tells that essential oils insecticidal efficacy was affected by environmental temperature and humidity variation. However, the efficacy of pyriproxyfen 10 EC is less affected by temperature and humidity variation in terms of adult mortality.
